Happy Halloween, Pt. 2:

We’re dressed as watermelons this year! We’re descendants of a Black sharecropper, who, like many newly freed Black citizens, very likely grew #watermelons among his crops in order to survive during early #reconstruction/Reign of Terror. For this reason, the fruit was negatively propagandized by southern whites who couldn’t bear the thought of free Black citizens not owing stolen labor or having to depend on them for survival.
The same fruit also sustained Arab populations in occupied territories, to which the British responded with similar negative generalizations based thereupon. Coincidentally, its colors are the same as those of the Palestinian flag, so when residents of Palestinian territory were forbidden to use the flag or her colors in posts or public demonstrations, the watermelon, a fruit that also grows well there & sustains people, was a discreet symbol of resistance to genocide there.
