If south Hampton
Told the citizens
That They don’t speak of his name
Ever again…not in textbooks
Not in Virginia at all
Hampton
Was like we don’t say his name….
Remember we skinned him alive
We ate him to the bone….
He was too powerful…

Black folks heard
And talked
And the white folks
Hushed them constantly
They triggered
They were traumatized

Yet his story lives on and on
Well white people
Y’all can’t stop this narrative
Y’all tried to buckbreak them in your tales

Is a wholesome spirit
That haunts all over your towns
In your bones…,
Honesty
