Ce changement rend hommage à l'étroite relation révolutionnaire entre Rawlings et le dirigeant burkinabé Thomas Sankara, qui partageaient des idéaux panafricanistes et anticoloniaux dans les années 1980. En supprimant le nom colonial et en le remplaçant par celui d'un révolutionnaire africain, le Burkina Faso marque son rejet de l'héritage colonial et son engagement en faveur de l'unité et de l'autodétermination africaines.
